SHELBY COUNTY STD STATISTICS

HIV:   According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2014 HIV Surveillance Report, the Memphis TGA ranked 6th in the nation for the rate of new HIV infections (Figure B-1) among the metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) of residence in the United States in 20144.

Did you know that memphis was targeted to reduce the spread of HIV by President Trump along with several other cities because of the spreading of new HIV cases in 2019 ?

HEPATITIS C:   From 2014 to 2018, there was a 193% increase in the number of newly reported chronic HCV cases in TN. These findings are thought to be reflective of the following factors in TN: 1) increasing rates of HCV, 2) increasing testing for HCV, and 3) the implementation of centralized chronic HCV surveillance efforts beginning in mid-2015.  Other notable findings among cases reported from 2014–2018 include: o Individuals less than 45 years of age accounted for:  52% of new chronic HCV infections, and  81% of acute HCV infections; o Women accounted for:  48% of acute and 49% of new chronic HCV cases among individuals less than 45 years of age, and  39% of acute and 37% of new chronic HCV cases among individuals 45 years of age and older; o The increased number of HCV cases among women of child-bearing age prompted the initiation of surveillance of HCV positive pregnant females on January 1st, 2018.

SPECIAL NOTE:

According to the CDC, hepatitis C previously was seen as a concern primarily for baby boomers and people with risk factors, such as injection drug use, but the new data finds that in 2018:

  • Millennials, or those born during 1981 to 1996, accounted for 36.5% of newly reported chronic hepatitis C infections.
  • Baby boomers accounted for 36.3% of newly reported chronic infections.
  • Generation X, born during 1966 to 1980, accounted for 23.1% of newly reported chronic infections.
